The Another Way Montessori Development Center is a school offering unique, individualized educational experiences for children in a nurturing, exquisitely prepared learning environment dedicated to the development of the whole child. The spiraling curriculum meets the needs of children 3-9 years of age. Another Way was founded in 2004 by Diane Bode, co-author of Child-Centered Skiing: The American Teaching System for Children, published by the Professional Ski Instructors of America. Another Way combines the philosophy and methods of Maria Montessori with the American Indian spiritual philosophy "We are all related," movement education, art, dance, skiing, equestrian education and frontier skills in an advanced curriculum that encourages "out of the box" thinking. When focused on highest good, there is always "Another Way." The facility embodies the philosophy and goals of Another Way. A spacious log cabin in a rustic setting roots modern instruction in early American cultures. Ample windows provide natural light and a view of high desert country. A generous, fenced playground abuts access to open public land suitable for nature hikes. Another Way is also a registered Professional Ski Instructor of America Ski School in the Intermountain Division with its own instructional slope on-site. The focus of Another Way Montessori Development Center, like Montessori's original work, is on the whole child: the physical, psychological, social, cognitive, and spiritual aspects of the child's development. Another Way is grounded in the American Indian philosophy "We are all related" and the ground rule: Respect and Accountability for: Self, Others and the Environment. Children are given freedom within limits leading to good judgment and in turn social accountability for one's own actions. Developing compassionate intelligence as they mature, the children reflect connection and peace in all they do. Another Way provides a completely different psychic environment focused on nurturing and supporting the natural laws that guide the development of the child and a curriculum designed to help children to prepare for and embrace the wave of change that is coming. Another Way connects the child to the Earth as primary teacher and the recognition that service to all Life is essential. An education worthy of the child takes what is best and most noble from civilization and places it in service of the child. The environment and curriculum must inspire passion for excellence, nurture curiosity, imagination and awaken the human spirit of every child. Along with the Montessori approach, we use compatible curriculum and programmatic elements of additional approaches and materials from the non-Montessori educational community that have been carefully researched to provide opportunities for enrichment beyond basic curriculum. The child is allowed to maximize development in an environment designed to stimulate and engage the whole child promoting an innate love of learning, a wide range of interests, and openness to new ideas and possibilities. Students consistently work from a very concrete level of experience to the abstract. We aid them in this process by first giving them the big picture and work toward an increasing level of detail. Thus, we use a spiraling curriculum in which we present skills and concepts and reintroduced them at increasing levels of complexity and abstraction over the years. It is for this reason, that in making admissions decisions, we weigh many factors, placing the greatest emphasis on whether the parents are deeply committed to sending their child to our school for the long run and for the right reasons and whether there is a close match in values at home and at school. Our maximum enrollment is twenty-five students.
