Activities - Movement Education and Dance
The child moves, learns, learns to move, and then moves to learn.
(Newell C. Kepart)

Movement Education:

Life without movement is unthinkable (Moshe Feldenkrais). The only point of reference the child has for directional information is her own system. Movement education is vital to the development of the child’s body image, spatial awareness and self-discipline. Movement education is the foundation of all other learning: physical, cognitive, emotional, social and spiritual. It is vital to healthy child development.

Children develop fundamental movement skills, elementary movement skills and specialized movement skills to a mature level at each stage of their development. The timetable for each level of development is:

Fundamental Movement Skills
(3-6)
Elementary Movement Skills
(7-10)
Specific Skill Development
(11-13)
Specialized Skill Development
(14 and up)

Dance and Creative Movement:

Feeling and expressing music and rhythm through the movement of a child’s own body is freeing and joyful. Ms. Kathleen Haynes teaches her Virginia Tanner method of movement weekly for 45 minutes. Children learn listening skills, how to follow directions and how to move their bodies with increasing effectiveness and joy.
